The firm handles cases before Cypriot courts involving cross-border disputes with parties, assets and legal issues spanning multiple jurisdictions. The team is headed by the firm's Partners, Mr. George Middleton and Mr. Christoforos Iosif.
The firm regularly acts, either independently or alongside international counsel, in complex proceedings that engage the laws and procedures of multiple jurisdictions. Core areas of work include freezing orders over assets held in or passing through Cyprus, cross-border shareholder disputes, claims involving parties and assets located across multiple countries, the enforcement of foreign arbitral awards under the New York Convention and applications involving the service of process out of the jurisdiction.
In shareholder and corporate disputes with a cross-border dimension, the firm acts for companies and shareholders in proceedings involving Cyprus-registered entities with operations or beneficial owners in other jurisdictions. Recent work has included the annulment of ex parte orders obtained by a minority shareholder of a DMCC-registered entity, and freezing injunctions over assets including crypto-currency held through international e-wallets.
The firm has particular experience in enforcement proceedings under the New York Convention. The team has acted on applications to recognise and enforce foreign arbitral awards in Cyprus, including in cases where enforcement was opposed on public policy grounds under Article V of the Convention. The firm has also handled enforcement proceedings against a sovereign state, successfully challenging the validity of service out of the jurisdiction where the applicant had breached its duty of full and frank disclosure.
The firm frequently works alongside leading law firms in other jurisdictions and has handled matters involving parties and assets in the United Kingdom, across the EU, Russia, the UAE and Ukraine.
