Professional profile

Thalia Kaoutzani is a highly experienced civil and commercial litigator with over 20 years of practice in the Firm, representing domestic and international clients in complex, high-value disputes before the Cypriot courts.

She holds an LL.B.(Hons) from the University of Bristol, completed the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) at the Inns of Court School of Law, London, and is a member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. She also holds an LL.M. in Commercial and Corporate Law from University College London (UCL).

Thalia is recognized for her analytical approach, meticulous attention to detail, strategic thinking, and commitment to delivering commercially effective outcomes for her clients. These qualities were instrumental in earning her admission to the Firm's partnership.

Thalia has appeared before all levels of the Cypriot courts, including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the District Courts, and has significant experience in handling cases involving novel and challenging legal issues. Her practice encompasses a broad spectrum of civil and commercial litigation matters, with extensive expertise in Insurance Litigation, Professional and Medical Negligence Claims, workplace accident litigation, serious Personal Injury claims, banking disputes, contractual disputes, and complex tort matters.

Her experience includes successfully representing insurance companies and acting for banks in significant recovery and commercial litigation matters, as well as private clients.

Thalia has successfully represented leading Cypriot banking institutions in numerous contentious proceedings before the District Courts of all over Cyprus, involving a wide spectrum of complex banking and commercial disputes. These included high-value claims arising from allegations of fraud, negligence, breach of statutory duty and contractual liability.

She also successfully acted on behalf of one of Cyprus's leading insurance companies in a significant number of civil proceedings before the District Courts of Cyprus. The matters concerned complex insurance and tort law issues, including claims for medical negligence, employers' liability, workplace accidents, and personal injury, requiring extensive litigation strategy, evidentiary analysis, and advocacy.

Thalia has also advised and assisted one of Cyprus's largest life insurance companies in connection with the structuring and completion of a strategic cross-border portfolio transfer transaction involving the sale of part of its insurance business to a major European insurance undertaking. She provided legal support relating to regulatory compliance and transactional documentation, throughout the process.

In addition, Thalia has successfully defended a Cypriot banking institution in a landmark and legally novel dispute concerning allegations of fraudulent credit card transactions. The proceedings involved complex issues relating to the interpretation and enforceability of cardholder terms and conditions, the allocation of liability between the financial institution and the customer, compliance with applicable banking regulations, and the adequacy of the Bank's internal controls, security protocols, and risk management procedures designed to safeguard electronic payment transactions.

As well, she successfully defended one of the largest companies in the aluminium industry against allegations that a defective product had caused a serious accident, in a landmark case involving legal issues for which no precedent existed in Cyprus.

Thalia also maintains an active presence in the field of Insurance Law through her participation in seminars, webinars and conferences, regularly contributing as a speaker at specialized professional and academic events.

She is a Founding Member of the Cyprus Forum of Insurance Lawyers, has contributed to the Chambers and Partners Guide on Insurance Litigation, holds the title of Arbitrator and she is also a member of the Cyprus Centre of ADR.
